This Practice describes the mechanical design, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, and documentation requirements for shell and tube heat exchangers constructed in accordance with TEMA Standards of the Tubular Exchangers Manufacturers Association and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1 or Division 2, henceforth referred to as the Code. Requirements that are specific to Code, Section VIII, Division 2 are shown in braces { }. This Practice is supplemental to the requirements of PIP VESV1002, Design and Fabrication Specification for Pressure Vessels, ASME Code Section VIII Divisions 1 and 2.

Supplemental Design Criteria and Purchasing Requirements for Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

This Practice provides requirements for use by a purchaser for determining the design criteria including design, materials of construction, inspection and testing for shell and tube heat exchangers constructed in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1 or Division 2, henceforth referred to as the Code, TEMA Standards of the Tubular Exchangers Manufacturers Association, and PIP VECV1001. Requirements that are specific to Code, Section VIII, Division 2 are shown in braces { }. This Practice provides requirements for purchasing shell and tube heat exchangers to be designed and fabricated by a manufacturer. This Practice also provides guidance for the development of purchase specifications for the construction of new shell and tube heat exchangers that meet the philosophy and requirements of Code, Section VIII, Division 1 {or 2} and PIP VECV1001. For some heat exchanger purchases, certain requirements in this Practice and in PIP VECV1001 may be assigned by purchaser to manufacturer. The specific requirements assigned (e.g., thermal design and the performance rating) shall be specified on purchaser’s PIP VEDST003 Data Sheet.

Documentation Requirements for Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers, ASME Code Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2 (Universally Applicable)

This Practice provides data forms and the associated instructions for specifying requirements for shell and tube heat exchangers constructed in accordance with TEMA, Standards of the Tubular Exchangers Manufacturers Association, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1 or Division 2, henceforth referred to as the Code. Requirements that are specific to Code, Section VIII, Division 2 are shown in braces { }. This Practice contains one data form for providing requirements for shell and tube heat exchangers having internal design pressures equal to or greater than 15 psig (103 kPa) and/or full vacuum external pressure at the top of the exchanger in its normal operating position, and are welded, shop- and field-fabricated, and in accordance with the requirements of the Code, Section VIII, Division 1 {or Division 2}. This Practice is required to be used with PIP VECV1001, PIP VESV1002, PIP VECST001, and PIP VESST002 to specify information necessary for the manufacturer to design and fabricate a shell and tube heat exchanger.

This Practice provides requirements for suppliers providing hygienic stainless steel ball valves included in PIP Piping Line Class Material Specifications. For the purposes of this practice, “Hygienic,” “Process,” or “Hygienic Process” refers to all Hygienic Processes for Food/Beverage/Consumer & Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) or other products requiring a clean design. Ball valves are most often used in utility systems, such as clean gas flow, steam, water, etc., that support hygienic processes; however, it is highly recommended to avoid use of ball valves in the hygienic process. If necessary, it is recommended that any product contact ball valves are designated as “Clean Out of Place (COP)” to prevent cross contamination between products and batches.

This Practice describes minimum requirements for design, performance, inspection, testing, and documentation of automatic delayed transfer systems (ATS) for two-source secondary selective substations, typically known as Main-Tie-Main transfer scheme. ATS provides automatic restoration of bus voltage upon loss of one of the sources. This Practice also covers remote monitoring and control requirements. This Practice does not cover fast bus transfer or delayed in-phase transfer systems.
